On the occasion of his new book, Performing Mourning, Laments in Contemporary Art, the Belgian dance dramaturg Guy Cools and the Biel-based artist/choreographer Gregory Stauffer will continue their ongoing artistic dialogue on creative and artistic practices and research.
Guy will give a short lecture-performance on the background of his book: his personal experience with mourning and his research of the Greek moiroloi (laments) that forms the backbone of his book. Gregory invites the public to participate in a practice-led introduction in the Malvaux/Biel forest, sharing his current research, Sustainable creative processes on how to translate the principles of permaculture into artistic contexts.
What links these two practices is a strong belief in the natural cycles and rhythms of nature and life as a base for any creative practice. As such, the moment of this exchange, close to the Spring Equinox has been a conscious choice. Every ending is a new beginning.
Guy Cools' lecture performance was created during residences at Theater Polis, Nicosia on invitation of Lia Haraki and Acziun Susch on invitation of Joanna Lesnierowska.
Gregory Stauffer's 'Sustainable creative processes' is undertaken in partnership with the research department of La Manufacture, Lausanne between 2021 and 2022.

“Quattro Stagioni” is an off-site program of espace libre, launched by the former director of the space, Andrea Marioni, in 2019. Each year, four artists or groups are invited to make an intervention within a perimeter marked on the ground with white paint, on the eastern stands of the Gurzelen Stadium, Biel/Bienne. Influenced by the passage of the four seasons, the Quattro Stagioni 'open-air white cube' supports poetic and playful dialogues between artistic practice and public space.
For the Spring edition, Collective Mein Verein will present a happening in the open-air white cube. Details to be announced shortly.

À l'occasion de son nouveau livre, Performing Mourning, Laments in Contemporary Art, le dramaturge belge de la danse Guy Cools et l'artiste/chorégraphe biennois Gregory Stauffer poursuivront leur dialogue sur les pratiques et les recherches créatives et artistiques.
Guy donnera une courte conférence-performance sur le contexte de son livre : son expérience personnelle du deuil et sa recherche sur les moiroloi (lamentations) grecs qui forment la colonne vertébrale de son livre. Gregory invite le public à participer à une balade collective dans la forêt de Malvaux/Bienne, partageant ses recherches actuelles: Processus créatifs durables, sur la manière de traduire les principes de la permaculture dans des contextes artistiques.
Ce qui lie ces deux pratiques est une forte croyance dans les cycles et rythmes naturels de la nature et de la vie comme base de toute pratique créative. En tant que tel, le moment de cet échange, proche de l'équinoxe de printemps, a été un choix conscient. Chaque fin est un nouveau départ.
La performance-lecture de Guy Cools a été créée lors de résidences au Theater Polis, Nicosie, à l'invitation de Lia Haraki et à l'Acziun Susch, à l'invitation de Joanna Lesnierowska.
Le projet "Sustainable creative processes" de Gregory Stauffer est réalisé en partenariat avec le département de recherche de La Manufacture, Lausanne entre 2021 et 2022.

"Quattro Stagioni" est un programme hors murs d'espace libre, lancé par l'ancien directeur de l'espace, Andrea Marioni, en 2019. Chaque année, quatre artistes ou groupes sont invité.es à réaliser une intervention dans un périmètre marqué au sol à la peinture blanche, sur les gradins est du stade de la Gurzelen, à Bienne. Influencé par le passage des quatre saisons, ce "cube blanc en plein air" soutient des dialogues poétiques et ludiques entre la pratique artistique et l'espace public.
Pour l'édition de printemps, le Collectif Mein Verein présentera un happening dans le 'open air white cube'. Plus de détails seront annoncés prochainement.

Anlässlich seines neuen Buches Performing Mourning, Laments in Contemporary Art setzen der belgische Tanzdramaturg Guy Cools und der Bieler Künstler/Choreograf Gregory Stauffer ihren kontinuierlichen künstlerischen Dialog über kreative und künstlerische Praktiken und Forschung fort.
Guy Cools wird in einer kurzen Lecture-Performance den Hintergrund seines Buches erläutern: seine persönlichen Erfahrungen mit Trauer und seine Recherchen zu den griechischen Moiroloi (Klagelieder), die das Rückgrat seines Buches bilden. Gregory lädt das Publikum ein, an einem Spaziergang im Wald von Malvaux/Biel teilzunehmen, bei dem er seine aktuellen Forschungen und nachhaltigen kreativen Prozesse vorstellt, wie die Prinzipien der Permakultur in künstlerische Kontexte übertragen werden können.
Was diese beiden Praktiken verbindet, ist der starke Glaube an die natürlichen Zyklen und Rhythmen der Natur und des Lebens als Grundlage für jede kreative Praxis. Daher war der Zeitpunkt dieses Austauschs nahe der Frühlings-Tagundnachtgleiche eine bewusste Entscheidung. Jedes Ende ist ein neuer Anfang.
Guy Cools' Lecture Performance entstand während eines Aufenthalts im Theater Polis, Nikosia, auf Einladung von Lia Haraki und Acziun Susch auf Einladung von Joanna Lesnierowska.
Das Projekt "Nachhaltige kreative Prozesse" von Gregory Stauffer wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Forschungsabteilung von La Manufacture, Lausanne, zwischen 2021 und 2022 durchgeführt.

"Quattro Stagioni" ist ein Off-Site-Programm von espace libre, das 2019 vom ehemaligen Direktor des Raums, Andrea Marioni, ins Leben gerufen wurde. Jedes Jahr werden vier Künstlerinnen und Künstler oder Gruppen eingeladen, innerhalb eines mit weisser Farbe auf dem Boden markierten Perimeters auf der Osttribüne des Gurzelenstadions in Biel eine Intervention durchzuführen. Beeinflusst durch den Lauf der vier Jahreszeiten, unterstützt der Quattro Stagioni "open-air white cube" poetische und spielerische Dialoge zwischen künstlerischer Praxis und öffentlichem Raum.
Für die Frühjahrsausgabe wird das Kollektiv Mein Verein ein Happening im Open-Air-White-Cube präsentieren. Details werden in Kürze bekannt gegeben.

Es ist die wahre Geschichte einer Erbschaft, die, wie in den meisten Familien, verschlungene Wege, langjährige Streitigkeiten, gescheiterte Träume und die ganze Komplexität der Liebe in unseren Familienbanden offenbart.

Guy Cools
Guy Cools is a Belgian dance dramaturge. He has worked as a dance critic and dance curator. He curated from 1990 till 2002, the dance program of Arts Centre Vooruit in Ghent, Belgium. As a production dramaturg, he worked amongst others with Jean Abreu (UK), Koen Augustijnen (BE), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (BE), Danièle Desnoyers (CA), Alexander Gottfarb (AT), Lia Haraki (CY), Akram Khan (UK), Joshua Monten (SUI), Arno Schuitemaker (NL) and Stephanie Thiersch (DE).
As a dramaturgical mentor, he has been mentoring a.o. the project Danse et Dramaturgie in Switzerland; the Biennale Dance College in Venice and the Atlas program of Impulstanz in Vienna. He lectures and teaches at different universities and arts colleges in Europe and Canada. With the Canadian choreographer, Lin Snelling, he developed an improvised performance practice Rewriting Distance (see also: www.rewritingdistance.com) that focuses on the integration of movement, voice, and writing.
His most recent publications include The Ethics of Art: ecological turns in the performing arts, co-edited with Pascal Gielen (2014); In-between Dance Cultures: on the migratory artistic identity of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan (2015); Imaginative Bodies, dialogues in performance practices (2016); and The Choreopolitics of Alain Platel’s les ballets C de la B, co-edited with Christel Stalpaert and Hildegard De Vuyst (2019) and Performing Mourning. Laments in Contemporary Art. (2021)
Cools lives in Vienna.
Gregory Stauffer (born in 1980) makes work which is deliberately located in a transverse and blurred territory between dance and performance, with touches of video here and there. Since 2006, he has been developing site-specific choreographic work, videos and performances. His shows are linked to ecosophical thought. They question the contexts within which they are created, playing with relationships of perspective and measure between human and environment, and the fictions they generate individually and collectively. His multidisciplinary practice favours collaborative work.
He lives and works in Biel/Bienne.
How it all started can no longer be reconstructed.
It's about pretexts for plastic activities. It's about mindless authorship. It's about archetypes and evolution, about understanding fragments, about sexual and other forms of orientation. It's about survival and liquefaction.

Mein Verein makes exhibitions with elements to touch or to be touched. All members of Mein Verein are present at the vernissage. As always.

Sophie Ballmer
In her research, Sophie Ballmer (*1978, lives and works in Lausanne) follows two parallel paths that she tries to make coincide. One is through the creation of common places that exist through collective spaces and projects, and the other is through the making of short films that draw their narratives from "family histories", those relationships that unite and divide people within a community and its multiple territories. Collecting life stories and anecdotes, she tries to reweave the erased links that bind and untie people. Through a daily practice of listening and solving concrete problems, the artist questions, reformulates and adapts the various possibilities of living together. Tinged with a lucid humor, this return to classical portraiture and to a certain form of slowness exposes and then proposes, through the narrative, not to solve an impossible problem, but to live by seeking each day a little more to blur the link between art and life in order to tend towards the setting up of a realizable utopia. In parallel to her artistic work, she founds and manages the independent art space Tunnel Tunnel in Lausanne and the interdisciplinary festival Curbit. She is also the producer of performative project Breathcore, initiated by the musician Michael Schmid.
Jan Buchholz, lives and works in Biel. He creates long and short films as well as video installations.
