Since 2019, artists Giorgia Piffaretti and Sophie Wright have been collaborating together by collecting fragments – pictures, notes, personal archive material – and experimenting with the multiple possibilities, experiences and narrative constellations that can emerge from these starting points. Their research takes on many different shapes, from lecture performances to multimedia installations, to speculate on the volatile lives of a single image.

Starting with the discovery of a family photo taken on the summit of Mont Blanc, the work In Vetta triggers an avalanche of fragments and associations from our collective imagination. What does the top of the mountain represent? In this ongoing project, Europe's highest mountain becomes a metaphor for our contemporary obsession with capturing time. Approaching the glacier as a 'natural archive', "In Vetta" poses questions relating to the past, nostalgia, loss and preservation that allow us to re-examine the relationship between man, image and nature from different angles.

For this exhibition at espace libre, the duo presents the new outcome
of their collaboration. Starting from But one last figure, a poster spread through the city of Biel/Bienne, the body of works includes two videos (majestic music) / (Berg rummelt) and Sentieri vengono tracciati dove prima non ce n’erano (Path are traced where there weren’t before). The exhibition explores and trans-forms the ‘ascent’ from a narrative of conquest and possession to a more attentive, sensory one.

Seit 2019 arbeiten Giorgia Piffaretti und Sophie Wright immer wieder zusammen, indem sie Fragmente (Bilder, Notizen, persönliches Archivmaterial) sammeln und damit vielfältige narrative Konstellationen darstellen. Die Untersuchungen gehen oft von einem statischen Ausgangspunkt aus, entwickeln sich dann experimentell in unterschiedliche Richtungen und zeigen sich beispielsweise als lecture performance oder Multimedia-Installation. Im Zentrum ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit steht die spekulative Erzählung von Bildern.

Ausgehend von einem Familienfoto, das auf dem Gipfel des Mont Blanc aufgenommen wurde, löst die Arbeit In Vetta eine Lawine von kollektiven Assoziationen aus. Der höchste europäische Berg wird zur Metapher eines Archivs, das unsere Besessenheit, die Zeit festhalten zu wollen, repräsentiert. Fragen zu Vergangenheit, Sehnsucht, Verlust und Konservierung drängen sich auf und ermöglichen, mit einem Blick aus verschiedenen Perspektiven die Beziehung zwischen Mensch, Bild und Natur neu zu untersuchen.

Depuis 2019, Giorgia Piffaretti et Sophie Wright travaillent ensemble, rassemblant des fragments (images, notes, matériel d'archives personnelles) pour présenter diverses constellations narratives. Les recherches partent souvent d'un point de départ statique, puis se développent expérimentalement dans différentes directions et se présentent, par exemple, sous la forme d'une conférence-spectacle ou d'une installation multimédia. Au centre de leur travail commun se trouve le récit spéculatif des images.

A partir d'une photo de famille prise au sommet du Mont Blanc, l'œuvre In Vetta déclenche une avalanche d'associations collectives. La plus haute montagne d'Europe devient la métaphore d'une archive qui représente notre obsession de vouloir capturer le temps. Les questions relatives au passé, à la nostalgie, à la perte et à la préservation s'imposent et nous permettent de réexaminer la relation entre l'homme, l'image et la nature sous différents angles.
